Requirements for International Medical Training Programs: A Guide for International Medical Graduates

The process of becoming a doctor in the United States is a lengthy one, taking at least three years to complete. Regardless of the training received abroad, doctors must complete a residency program in order to practice medicine in the United States or Canada. To help international medical graduates (IMG) find the right program for them, there are more than 400 programs available to search and filter. Each program has its own admission requirements, application processes, costs, benefits, and financial aid options.

The Mayo Clinic M. D. program prepares students to translate scientific discoveries into applications that improve patient care. This requires a wide range of skills, aptitudes and characteristics.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for educational programs regardless of race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, protected veteran status, or disability status. To be accepted into the Mayo Clinic M. program, applicants must have a bachelor's degree or pharmacy D. degree from an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada.

This requirement cannot be replaced by a higher degree. All applicants must take the Medical School Admission Test (MCAT) and have their scores published in the AMCAS application no later than October. Only MCAT scores reported within three years after the year of enrollment are considered in admission decisions. There is no minimum undergraduate GPA requirement for admission to Mayo Clinic M.

D.In addition to academic requirements, applicants must meet and maintain certain non-academic criteria (technical standards) to participate in the Medical Scientist Training Program. These include intellectual-conceptual, integrative and quantitative skills as well as social and behavioral attributes. International medical graduates (IMG) have an important decision to make when it comes to selecting a residency program that best fits their individual needs and goals. To increase their chances of accessing a residency program, IMG must understand qualifications, select the right program and submit a strong application. To be accepted into a residency program in the United States or Canada, IMG must meet certain requirements including passing the medical sciences exam requirement, the clinical skills requirement and the communication skills requirement. IMG must also apply for a minimum of 25 programs through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), which is administered by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).It is also recommended that IMG participate in an observatory rotation in a clinical setting before applying for a residency program.

The 2024 American Medical Association Medical Student Promotion Conference (MAC) will be held March 7-8, 2024 and is an excellent opportunity for IMG to learn more about residency programs. By understanding qualifications, selecting the right program and submitting a strong application, international medical graduates can increase their chances of obtaining a residency position and embarking on a successful medical career in the United States.
